02. Photo probably passed down to John Henry Hinton (1902-1986) from his parents Charles Oliver Hinton (1868-1950) and Minnie Ann Oliver North (1871-1911).
Whom We Suspect
Subject sitting left: Flossie unknown.
Subject standing right probably: Mabel or Mable unknown.
Positive identification NOT confirmed.
About the Photo
Photographer: Unknown.
Date: Unknown
Writing on back of photo in pencil appears to be in at least two different hands. In one hand, the last two letters of the word "Mabel" have been erased and rewritten as "Mable". In another's writing, the words "Flossie", and "North & sister?" are penciled.
"Flossie", which is written on original photo front in greenish-blue ink, may be the signature of the subject below the name.
Original photo appears newer than most in this collection, and could be from the 1910's - 1920's. Dimensions approx. 2 x 3 3/4 inches.
This photo's finish feels porous and paper-like.
What Else We Know
A) My family and genealogy records show:
Only one Flossie:
- Flossie May North, b. October 26, 1897 d. March 4, 1898. According to my 11-17-2001 telephone interview with Mable Marie North (b. December 29, 1906), she knew no Flossie North, unless that was her parent's baby that died in infancy of spinal meningitis.
Flossie North eliminated as photo subject.
Four women named Florence:
- Florence Ruth Hinton b. 24 May 1895 (in North Dakota), daughter of John Richard ("Jack") Hinton and Minnie Irene Grant. Born in Clinton County, New York, Jack Hinton came West prior to 1894. He may have lived in in the states of Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Florence Hinton married 19 Dec 1914 in Friday Harbor, San Juan Co., Washington, Ralph Vallen Boyce. In the 1970's, Florence and sister Gladys Hinton Smith (of 2223 NW 64th Street, Seattle, Washington) lived near Vancouver Island, Washington.
- Florence Athlene Sandilands b. unknown, daughter of William Sandilands b. January 31, 1856 in Indiana. William is son of Alexander Sandilands b. Abt. 1812 and Dorothy Irving Oliver b. 10 May 1815. A legatee in the will of James Oliver in 1909, Athlene (then a minor) lived in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Not closely related, thus, an unlikely subject.
- Florence Jane Eads b. 24 May 1899, daughter of Solomon Cave Eads, Jr. b. December 13, 1844 in The Dalles, Wasco, Oregon Territory and Mary Melissa Susan Calder b. 22 Mar 1872.
As Eads is a surname of my mother's maternal, not paternal, family, this person is unlikely.
- Florence Klamroth b. unknown, wife of James William Page b. January 16, 1915. James is son of Ralph Lewis Page b. September 20, 1887 and Jessie Murrel Eads b. September 17, 1893 in Hardman, Morrow Co., Oregon. Jessie was a sister to my maternal grandmother, Lula Bell Eads b. July 15, 1904. Florence Page, to my knowledge, is not nicknamed "Flossie."
This person is unlikely.
Our Reasoning
We are at a loss on identifying the individuals in this photo other than having their first names. We suspect that one or both are family, however, they may simply be friends of our ancestors.
My mother believes the word "Mable" witten on the back of this photo is in the hand of her paternal grandfather (8th Hinton son), Charles Oliver Hinton. (Other letters show that Grandpa Charlie did spell Mabel as "Mable.")
If the Mable in this photo is Mabel Hinton, born 28 Oct 1891 (daughter of 3rd son Al & Ella Youngs Hinton), she removed her eyeglasses before being photographed.
Mabel Unknown
Mabel Hinton
In that case, who the heck is Flossie?
