Whom We Suspect
Subject identified as John North little girl.
I believe this is Sally North (b. about 1900), first daughter of John O. H. North (John Oliver Henry North, b. February 8, 1868, d. February 1950) and Mary Jane Devereaux (b. May 1867, d. 1941).
Identification: Similar photo #4124-B is a reprint of same subject purchased Feb. 2002 and received May 10, 2002 from the Iosco County Historical Museum.
Positive full name identification not yet received... (but isn't she a cutie?!)
About the Photo
Photo taken by A. G, Emery, East Tawas, Michigan.
Date: Definitely between 06/27/1902 and ?/1903; Estimated to be early in 1903
No writing was on the front or back of this original photograph.
Original photo is typical of those taken in the late 1800's and early 1900's and was trimmed (possibly to fit into an old-type photo album).
This photo is the cabinet type (pasted to thick cardboard), but has been trimmed, eliminating photographer's information.
What Else We Know
Photographer, A. G. Emery's East Tawas location assures us the John North little girl was in that area of Michigan in 1902 or 1903, the time this photo was taken.
John Oliver Henry North was born in Tawas township, Michigan, and died in East Tawas, Iosco Co., Michigan. Reportedly, he is buried in Tawas City Cemetery, Iosco County, Michigan.
Residence in 1909 was East Tawas, Michigan. [James Oliver Estate Settlement Report]
John married December 23, 1897 in Port Huron, St. Clair, Michigan, Mary Jane Devereaux of Port Huron, St. Clair, Michigan.
Mary Jane Devereaux was born May 1867 in Michigan, died 1941, (probably) in Michigan. [1900 Census - East Tawas, Iosco County, Michigan, Page 58B; Household #164, Family #165 - State Street] [John O. H. North, Feb. 1950 obituary]
On the 13th day of June, 1900, the couple are found living on State Street in East Tawas, Michigan. [1900 Census - East Tawas, Iosco County, Michigan, Page 58B; Household #164, Family #165 - State Street]
John O. H. and Mary Jane had at least three (3) children:
John O. H. North enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard March 20, 1897, he was stationed at Marquette for three years. In 1900 he returned to the Tawas Point station, where he served as surfman until his retirement May 20, 1927. [John O. H. North, Feb. 1950 obituary]
Our Reasoning
The late 1902 or early 1903 estimated date of this photo, and the apparent age of the little girl (about 3 years old) points to Sally North as the subject. We know of only two daughters born to John & Mary North, and their second, Dorothy, was not born until 1903.
With births, deaths, burials, and census records all documented in the Tawas and Iosco County, Michigan, area, we know John O. H. North and family were there.
Comments
John was member of the I.O.O.F., the Maccabees, and the American Legion. [John O. H. North, Feb. 1950 obituary]
