Charles O. Hinton, age 81
Caldwell, Idaho ~ June 17, 1950

Charles Oliver HINTON, age 32
Jackson, Michigan ~ 1900
Charles Oliver HINTON, my great grandfather, was the 8th of 9 sons born to Thomas HINTON (born abt. 1825 in England) and Selina O'NEILL (b. 24 Apr 1829 in Covey Hill, Canada). After their 1851 Quebec marriage, the couple settled in Mooers, New York, 2-3 miles from the Canadian border and O'Neill family home.
Huntingdon, Beauharnois & Châteauguay Protestant parish registers (available online) document many events pertaining to these allied families.
Names found of public record are used interchangeably.

Mystery Couple Possibly Thomas and Selina

(Hinton-Youngs Kleinert Collection)
|
MOTHER: Celina/Selina O'NEILL
Selina (aka Salina, Celina, Sallany) is the only daughter and oldest of 3 children born to William O'NEILL (b. Apr 1806 in Covey Hill, Quebec, Canada), and Abigail SHERMAN (b. abt. 1811 in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, or Connecticut). William was the youngest of 5 children and 3rd son born to James O'NEILL (b. in County Limerick or Northern Ireland), and Mary Margaret MCMULLEN (McMullin or McMullan) of Monaghan Twp, York Co., Pennsylvania. The grandfather, James O'Neill, came to North America as a British soldier in his young manhood prior to the Revolution. Salina O'NEILL had 2 younger brothers, James O'NEILL and Henry O'NEILL, and from her father's second marriage to Mary EDWARDS, a half-sister, Jane O'NEILL, and 3 half-brothers, Charles Edward O'NEILL, John O'NEILL, and William O'NEILL, who died in childhood.
Celina wed at the age of 22, in Hemmingford Township (Wesleyan Methodist Congregations of Russelltown Circuit) Quebec, Canada, Thomas HINTEN. The couple had 9 sons, the youngest 18 months before her death.
Celina O'Neill HINTON died 27 May 1874 in Mooers township, Clinton County, New York, aged 45.
FATHER: Thomas HINTON
Thomas and John are both cited as the given name of the father, commonly known as Thomas HINTON. His full name is likely John Thomas HINTON, but may be Thomas John HINTON. His parents (born in England) are unknown. The date of his emigration to North America and port of arrival are unknown, however, he was in Quebec, Canada, by 1841. In County Huntingdon, 10 October 1841, Thomas Hinton witnessed the baptism of twins born 21 April 1841 to Thomas HOUNSLOW and Louisa Baron HASTINGS of Montreal, Canada. (Baron may be Barron or Barren, surnames found in Chateauguay Valley parish records and Lovell's Montreal City directories.) Thomas Hounslow's occupation is: "royal engineer department."
The 1851 marriage record of Thomas HINTON and Celina O'NEILL lists his residence as Hemmingford (QC) and occupation as yeoman. He was a farmer and landowner in Mooers, Clinton County, New York, 1860 and 1870 census. Widowed and "crippled or disabled" by 1880, Thomas resides in Mooers, NY, with 80 year-old farmer Abel TRYON, formerly his neighbor.
Thomas HINTON died 14 May 1891 in the Block-house Settlement of Wilber township, Iosco County, Michigan, aged 68.

In his household is wife Martha, born Oct. 1864 in Canada, and 2 daughters: Hazel Hinton born Dec 1887 in New York, and Fern Hinton born Jan 1895 in Michigan.

- Francis HINTON
, born 11 Nov 1872 in Hemmingford, Quebec (more probably in Mooers, Clinton Co., New York) was less than 18 months old when his mother Selina O'NEILL HINTON died of typhoid. The widowed father Thomas HINTON, crippled by "rheumatism" and unable to tend the young sons, surrendered them to various families. Frank HINTON likely spent his pre-school childhood in more than one household. (He may be the unidentified little boy on the right in a portrait of the Henry O'Neill Family, circa 1875.) Informally adopted or in foster care, by 1881 Francis BARR, age 9, birthplace USA, is enumerated in the Hemmingford, Quebec, household of John Graham BARR and Elizabeth CLELLAND (married 03 Nov 1875) a line below the couple's 11-month-old son, Thomas BARR. John G. is first cousin to Jane BARR, who married in 1865 Frank's maternal uncle Henry O'NEILL, and died 14 Jan 1866, soon after birthing son, Henry Barr O'NEILL (pictured far left about age 10). The family connection perhaps waned, for in 1891, at age 19, Francis HINTON is a domestic enumerated with the same family in the Hemmingford household of Peter CHAUM, and listed now a line below 2-year-old Margaret BARR, daughter of John and Elizabeth. Not only has Frank's surname reverted, his religion has gone from Presbyterian to "Free Church." How much, if anything, the youth was told about his biological parents is unknown; the listed birthplace for both is "United States." Elizabeth CLELLAND BARR died 20 Aug 1894 and Lieut. Col. John G. BARR marries 25 Aug 1895 his young cousin Florence May CHURCHILL. The same year, 1895, Frank emigrates to the United States, where in the state of Massachusetts he is enumerated in 1900 Leominster, Worcester County, as Frank BARR, born in Canada. Age 27, he is a boarder, occupation cabinet maker, in the household of Charles POWERS, as is 28-year-old Canadian boarder, Charles CAMPBELL, a naturalized U.S. citizen. In 1902, Frank relinquishes all successions rights to the estates of his birth family, as did a few of his older brothers before him. From that time forward, Frank HINTON fades away and apparently is never seen or heard from again.
Brother "Frank Hinton, whose whereabouts are unknown" is mentioned in the 1907 obituary of brother Allen.
Frank William BARR born 11 Nov 1872 in Hemmingford, Quebec, Canada, married 22 Jul 1908 in Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts, Matilda J. TANSEY, born December 1875 in Massachusetts, daughter of Patrick J. TANSEY and Catherine T. unknown (both born in Ireland).
Frank & Tillie had 2 daughters:
- Katherine A. Barr, b. Abt. 1910 in Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts.
- Frances M. Barr, b. 25 Aug 1913 in Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts, d. 10 Jan 1996 in Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts.

A special thanks to cousin Marilyn E. O. H. of Nova Scotia, Canada, who provided a copy of the 1902 "Sale of movable and immovable succession rights from Mr. Frank Hinton alias F. Barr to Mr. John O'Neil". Without those particulars, Francis Hinton (9th son) may never have been found.

O'Neill
James O'NEILL, our emigrant grandfather, was born in Limerick or Northern Ireland to Irish Protestant parents James and Bridget O'Neill. Although educated for the ministry of the Church of England, he sailed to North America before the Revolution as a young musician in the British Army. He enlisted 27 Aug 1775 in His Majesty's Royal Regiment of Highland Emigrants 2nd Battalion (84th Regiment of Foot) commanded by Major John SMALL. Ordered at Head Quarters, Boston, Massachusetts, 12 June 1775, "By His Excellency The Honorable Thomas GAGE General and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's Forces in North America," the corp was comprised primarily of men from the Mohawk Valley who had previously served in His Majesty's military corps. Major Small's Battalion headquartered at Halifax, Nova Scotia, and served as marines. Their duties included battle service from the shores of Lake Champlain to the cotton fields of South Carolina. United Kingdom correspondence archives document the dire conditions of this regiment, the need for clothing and the lack of food and essential supplies.
At the end of Revolutionary War conflict, 1775-1781, defeated British forces and Loyalists had lost much more than the war. Their homes, lands, and valuables confiscated, colonists loyal to the Crown not only lost family, friends, and countrymen, they lost their newly-adopted homeland or birth land. Officers and gentry came first on the list of those wishing return passage to the British Isles. The no-less-noble of the King's men, enlisted men, volunteers, and families of modest means, void of funds and transportation homeward, took sanctuary in Canada and Nova Scotia. The promised land grants and compensation for losses took years and numerous formal pleas to obtain.
The Treaty of Paris in 1783 officially ended the war. Meanwhile, for most British Loyalists and foot soldiers, the voluntary engagement resulted in involuntary hardship.
Where our forefather James O'NEILL resided during that time may be undocumented, as no record of residence has surfaced. His youngest son when age 77, stated, "My father James O'Neill...served on the British side in the Revolution ...When he left, he came to Canada and lived some time at Odelltown and at Montreal."
By 1790, James had "married in Pennsylvania" Mary Margaret MCMULLEN, daughter of Hugh MCMULLEN and Anne (surname unknown) of Monaghan township, York Co., Pennsylvania. The 1792 Will of Hugh MCMULLIN, lists daughter Mary, wife of "James O. Nail," as one of six children. She was, son William continued, "...either an Irish woman or of Irish parents." Thus, we surmise, she was born (about 1773) in Ireland or Pennsylvania.
A sister of M. M. McMullen, likely Jane MCMULLEN, married James BRISBIN (brother of William BRISBIN of Covey Hill, PQ) and "lived in Lake Champlain." (Lake Champlain may now be Champlain, Clinton County, New York.) Any information on this family would be appreciated.
O'Neill Descendants
-
James O'NEILL, born in Limerick or Northern Ireland, likely Bet. 1750 - 1765, died (after 1832) in Covey Hill, Quebec, Canada, and is buried at Union Church Cemetery, Covey Hill, Huntingdon Co., Quebec, Canada. One document states his will is dated 1832. He married before 1790 in Pennsylvania, Mary Margaret MCMULLEN, b. 1773 in Ireland or Pennsylvania.
James married 2nd Bet. 1835 - 1838, likely in Hemmingford, (unknown) SMITH of Hemmingford, PQ Canada, b. unknown, d. unknown. (No official record found.) Son William, mentions,"The first time I went to the city was when I was 13 years old. I went in company with my brother Henry and my stepmother...My stepmother's name was Smith, and she came from Hemmingford...."
Mary MCMULLAN and James O'NEILL had 5 children, Hugh, Thomas, Mary, Susanna, and William, the youngest three born on the 200-acre parcel granted by the British Crown.
- Hugh O'NEILL born May 1791 in Canada or the USA, (Monaghan, York County, Pennsylvania 1790 census, p. 378, lists James Oneill and Hugh McMullin), died 06 Nov 1879 in Covey Hill, Havelock, Quebec, Canada, and interred 07 Nov 1879, likely at Union Cemetery, Covey Hill. Occupations of record include carpenter, farmer, and mechanic. Hugh O'NEIL is listed on page 49 of "Canadian Veterans of the War of 1812," and as age 83 in 1875 in "Statement showing Militiamen of 1812-1815 who have applied to participate in the gratuity voted by Parliament in 1875."
Hugh ONEIL, farmer, age 60, Presbyterian, born in Canada, is enumerated on the 1851 census in Hemmingford, Beauharnois County, Canada East (Quebec), as widowed. (No record of marriage has surfaced.) In 1871 Havelock, Huntingdon Co., Quebec census, Hugh ONEIL age 79, mechanic, Church of England, is born in U.S.A. and marital status is blank.
On a light note, Hugh ranks this [rather spirited] December entry in William Edwards' Diary for 1854: "DEC - Wed 27 - Commenced making a wood sled. In the afternoon had Hugh O'Neil at it but he had rather much whiskey in him to be of much use."
Parish books of the Presbyterian Church at Russelltown record Hugh's 1879 death and burial.
DEATH NOTICE: The New Dominion, December 4, 1879: Died - At Covey Hill, on the 6th inst., Hugh O'Neill, aged 88 years and 6 months..
- Thomas O'NEILL was born Abt. 1793 in (place unknown). (Could be Pennsylvania USA, Odelltown or Montreal, Canada, or ?)
One Thomas O'NEIL is listed on the "Final Estimate of Work Performed on Lock no 4, Beauharnois Canal. Appendix no 2, Paylist for men cutting Drains on Canal from 7th to 30 th Nov 1843 inclusive," and received wages for five days work. The construction of the Beauharnois Canal (now part of the St. Lawrence Seaway) began in 1842 and was completed in 1845.
No official record of Thomas has surfaced.
- Mary O'NEILL b. Dec 1795 in Covey Hill, Hemmingford, Huntingdon, Quebec, d. 08 May 1871 in Covey Hill, Havelock Twp, Huntingdon Co., Quebec, Canada, and is buried at Union Cemetery, Covey Hill, Quebec, Canada. She never married.
Mary's 1871 death is recorded in Quebec Protestant parish records.
- Susanna O'NEILL b. Jul 1802 in Covey Hill, Havelock, Huntingdon, Quebec, d. 29 Jan 1881 in Hemmingford, Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada. She is buried at Union Cemetery, Covey Hill, QC, and shares a tombstone with Jane Barr O'Neill, first wife of Susan's nephew Henry, .
"Aunt Susan" pitched in after the death of her sister-in-law, Abigail Sherman, and helped her brother William raise his three motherless children. Celina had just turned six, James was not yet three, and Henry only eight weeks old. It must have seemed like déjà vu when 31 years later, Susan returned to tend the motherless babe of nephew Henry, whom she had coddled since his second month of life. For the next several years, she added another baby Henry to her list of to-do's and undoubtedly to her heartstrings.
DEATH NOTICE: The New Dominion, February 17, 1881: "Died - At Hemmingford, on the 29th ult, at the residence of her nephew, H. O'Neill, Miss Susanna O'Neill, in her 79th year."
- William O'NEILL, b. Apr 1806 in Covey Hill, Hemmingford, Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada, died 04 Jan 1891 in Covey Hill, Havelock twp, Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada, aged 84 years 9 months, and is buried in Union Church Cemetery, Covey Hill, Havelock, Quebec. He married Bef. 1829, Abigail SHERMAN, b. about 1811 in Connecticut or Monongahela, Pennsylvania, d. 10 May 1835 (probably in Covey Hill) and is reportedly buried beside Jane Barr and Susanna O'Neill at Union Church Cemetery, Covey Hill, QC.
Records leading to Abigail's heritage have not surfaced. We find no record of her birth, baptism, marriage, burial, or tombstone. Her name and date of death (as above) are cited in an 1850 Deed of Sale between her sons Hugh and William. An 1866 letter regarding the premature death of Jane Barr O'Neill states, Henry had her buried "beside his mother."
William and Abigail had 3 children.

O'NEILL INFORMATION:
Châteauguay Valley Protestant Church Registers show Thomas and Celina married 05 Mar 1851 at the Wesleyan Methodist Congregations Church in the Russelltown Circuit, Southwestern Québec, Canada. Thomas's surname is spelled HINTEN in the register of the minister, Hugh Montgomery. Residence for both bride and groom is listed as Hemmingford. Witness were James O'NEILL and Mary EDWARDS.
Salina's Baptism record shows she was baptized 24 mar 1840 as:
Name: Sallany
Surname: ONeil
Father: William O.Neil
Mother: Abigail
Residence: Hemmingford
-
Note that brothers James O'NEIL, b. 27 Jul 1832, and Henry O'NEIL, b. 09 Mar 1835, were baptized the same time and place. This confirms these 3 children as siblings.
-
An LDS/IGI patron submission by Sandra K. TANNER of Manitoba, Canada, shows of Hemmingford, Lower Canada, the same William O NEILL (b. Apr 1806) born 1807; married Abigail SHERMAN b. Abt. 1811. Sandra submitted as children of William and Abigail two sons, James O NEILL b. 1832, d. 1912, and Henry O NEILL b. 1835.
She lists the 2nd marriage for William O NEILL 21 Apr 1851 to Mary EDWARDS, and born to them 3 children: John O NEILL b. 15 Jan 1856, Jane O NEILL b. 01 Apr 1852, and Charles E. O NEILL b. 27 Aug 1853.
-
Among Quebec parish records are the 1891 death and burial of Salina's father William O'NEILL, and his 21 Apr 1851 marriage to Mary EDWARDS b. 07 Apr 1825 in Scotland. (Likely the Mary EDWARDS that witnessed the 1851 marriage of Celina O'NEILL and Thomas HINTON.)
-
The parish registers show 4 children born to William & Mary Edwards O'Neill: Jane "Jeannie" O'NEILL b. 01 Apr 1852, Charles O'NEILL b. 27 Aug 1853 (1843 erroneously recorded), John "Jack" O'Neill b. 15 Jan 1856, and William O'NEILL b. 28 Aug 1860, d. 04 Nov 1862, in the 3rd year of his age.

1860 - 1870 Census Comments:
One assumes the father's name is John Thomas Hinton, and he commonly went by Thomas.
1880 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS
- The father Thomas Hinton (enumerated as Thomas Hinten) is age 54, widowed, and a "Boarder" residing in Mooers, NY, with 80-year-old Abel TRYON (or TRYAN), born in Canada, a neighboring farmer in previous years. Thomas is a farmer disabled with "rheumatism" and cannot write.
- Sturgis Hintman [sic] (3rd son Sturges Allen Hinton), "Servant", age 23, "Gardener", resides in Jackson, Michigan, with Franklin WOOD, 44-year-old "Market Gardener" born in Canada. (In 1860, Wood resides in Ellenburgh [Mooers Forks P.O.], Clinton County, NY.)
- Arthur Hinton, 7th son, is listed as "Servant", age 15, "Works on Farm" and resides with Lathrop CLARK, 62-year-old farmer, born in NY. (Clark's property is next door to the Tryon place.) Art Hinton does not attend school, cannot read, and cannot write.
1880 Census Comments:
Close matches exist for some of the remaining Hinton brothers in 1880 census enumerations, however, none match exactly. (For a list of those possibilities, contact webmaster.) The 1880 search, and research, continues.
1881 - 1891 CANADIAN CENSUS:
1900 - 1920 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS:
1930 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS:
- By 1930, 6 of the 9 Hinton sons are known dead, #1 Hiram, #2 Bill, #3 Al, #4 Jack, #5 Jim, and #7 Art.
- If living, 6th son Tom (alias: Thomas Ackses, Axis, Axel, or ?) has not surfaced.
- Charlie, 8th son (my great-grandpa), reportedly resided in 1930 in Adrian, Oregon, with oldest son (my granddad) John HINTON, yet the family has gone missing, including Charlie's son George HINTON, likely in the same household. In December 1929, the John Hinton house burned to the ground, so they may have taken up temporary quarters elsewhere. (The search for them in 1930 continues.)
- Frank (Hinton) BARR, 9th son, resides in the home of his sister-in-law Minnie TANSEY at 134 Main Street, Leominster, Massachusetts, with wife, two daughters, and a (perhaps unrelated) family of renters, Albert E. WILD, wife Annie WILD, and son Albert A. WILD, Baptist clergyman.

Online are records of the Quebec, Canada, 1851 marriage of Thomas HINTON and Celina O'NEILL and baptisms of the first 3 of these 9 sons, Hiram (1852), William and Sturges Allen (1856). Spelling of the names on found records vary, but at least now we have documented proof of who they are and where they come from. (Evidently, spelling doesn't count.)
-
The record of baptism of Jane O'Neill (1852) and John O'Neill (1856) appear in the parish books on the page preceding the above mentioned Hinton baptisms, and were likely performed in conjunction.

IGI patron submitted files list May 18, 1859 in Clinton Mills, Clinton County, New York, James Henry HINTON born to Thomas Henry HINTON and Selma O'NEAL. Also in Clinton Mills, Clinton Co., New York, December 23, 1888, Hazel Salina HINTON was born to James Henry HINTON and Martha Ann MOORE. Of these same parents was born January 2, 1895 in Tawas City, Iosco Co., Michigan, Fern Elisabeth HINTON. (The patron was not identified.) Though dates and parent names vary slightly, these persons are definitely apart of our Hinton clan. Surnames thus far found connected to James and Martha are: MOORE, SCHREIBER, NEWBERRY, WATSON, THOMPSON, and GRENKE or GRENKEY.
- Family story has it that one of these brothers froze to death in Montana; to date, no evidence has been found to document this.
Note, however, that John Richard Hinton married 28 Oct 1894 Minnie Irene Grant in Newlon Township, Dawson, Montana.
